This project was the result of a competition that I entered as part of a class. The brief was to create an original houseware.

The Problem
The market for log holders is saturated with products that are either too focused on sculptural and aesthetic properties or too focused on functionality.
The Solution
The Plume Log Holder will balance both aesthetics and functionality in order to provide a beautiful sculptural piece that is every bit as practical and useful. The idea is to create within the piece a place for logs, a place for kindling, and a place for a lighter and firestarters.
I moved on to sketching out ideas for the overall shape of the piece. I sketched out different pieces inspired by logs, smoke, and fire.
Inspiration
Inspiration was drawn from:
Organic shapes, acknowledging the provenance of wood.
The movement of smoke.
The movement of fire.
Final Design
Curves make basins for wood and kindling.
Round compartment for firestarter, lighter, and matches.
Extra curves make a rack for the tools, poker, tongs, dustpan, and broom.
Tool Rack
Balls on the shafts of the tools fit into sockets on the racks, and along with an angle use gravity to stay in place.
The Experience of a Fireplace
The product I wanted to make had to address each of these steps. I wanted this product to provide the full experience, or at least get as close to providing the full experience as possible.
