OctoHooks, 30 Watt Design Challenge 2021 Winner
As part of one of my classes, my professor had my classmates and I sign up for the 30 Watt Design Challenge, a nation-wide competition hosted by 30 Watt. The brief for the challenge was simple; create a product that you would like to receive as a gift! There were a few guidelines to keep it simple, such as keeping the number of parts low, avoiding technology, keeping the size small, and a few others. OctoHooks was my take on this brief, and I won first place!
The submission was required to be in a two-page document, detailing anything we wanted to about the product. As you can see below, I included simple scale measurements, in-use renders, and manufacturing ideas. 30 Watt sent the 3D file of the doughnut to the participants as a fun way to show the relative size of the product and so I included a rendering of my product holding the doughnut on the second page.
Early Ideations
During the ideation process, I narrowed my brainstorm to 3 ideas, and from those, I picked one and developed it. My three main ideas were:
Toilet paper holder shaped like a man, blindfolded.
Pencil holder planter. shaped like a little man with a planter for a head.
A shower phone holder shaped like a monkey from the barrel of monkeys game or an octopus.
Once I decided to make the octopus phone holder, I broadened the horizons of what it could hold and made a study model.
